Odyssey's design is inspired by the beautiful curves of natural objects, specifically the horn, an object known for its mystery and adventurous spirit. The color theme is inspired by the Caribbean Sea - deep sea, beach sand, and the tropical toucan bird. The device offers two ways of interacting with users - 'see through' and 'listen to', inspired by the seashell and telescope.
What sets Odyssey apart is its augmented reality platform designed specifically for kids. Children can follow an interesting storyline by listening to the product and explore the outer world by finding hidden objects with the AR display. This encourages outdoor play with friends or family members, offering an exciting alternative to static indoor content like YouTube.
The main body of Odyssey is composed of ABS plastic, chosen for its less stiff and impact-resistant properties, ideal for kids' active play. The frontal part is made of maple wood and wrist straps are made of strong fabric. The main technology used is GPS, ensuring safety for both kids and guardians.
The interaction with Odyssey is designed to be adventurous and mysterious, stirring children's imagination. Kids find hidden objects by listening to sound from Odyssey and interact with objects when they reach its location. The AR display only appears when they reach hidden objects, preventing accidents caused by walking while obsessed with a digital screen. Guardians can set up the game, limit the play zone, and place virtual game items on the map with their device. The device notifies the real-time location of children with GPS signal and alerts when children step outside of the designated play zone.
Odyssey was designed and developed over a year at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea. The design team faced challenges in creating an outdoor activity that was exciting for kids and reassured safety for guardians. However, they succeeded in creating a product that encourages physical activity and direct interaction with people and nature, contributing to children's balanced mental and physical growth.
Odyssey has been recognized for its innovative design and contribution to children's play, winning the Silver A' Baby, Kids and Children's Products Design Award in 2019. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
